GIFTS FROM BABYLON
Directors: Bas Ackermann & Babucar Manka
Narrative, Color, 24 min.
Gambia/The Netherlands 2018
English and Wolof with English subtitles

"Gifts from Babylon" is a short narrative film showing the complicated homecoming of a young Gambian return-migrant, who has lived illegally in "Babylon" for five years. Babylon is the name which is often used in Gambia when referring to Europe – and the idealized destination of many young Gambians when taking the backway, the dangerous and illegal smuggler’s journey to Europe via Libya and the Mediterranean. The main character is Modou (Christopher Tijan Smith), who took the backway when he was in his early twenties. Back then, he stole money from local gang leader, Jimmy the Fixer, to cross the desert in an overcrowded truck and the sea in a rickety boat. After five years in Europe, he is now deported to his home country, where he attempts to reunite with his family and friends. However, after the dehumanizing and traumatizing experience of his migrant journey, Modou returns to the Gambia as a changed man – a man his family and friends do not recognize anymore. On top of that, the debts he left behind have not been forgotten by Jimmy the Fixer. While suffering from intense flashbacks of his traumatic journey, he wonders what has become of himself…

After Burkina Faso’s October 2014 popular uprising, the young poet Bikontine begins to question his dreams of seeking a better life in the West. He decides to meet his fellow citizens along the country’s only rail line. From South to North, through cities and villages, he learns about their dreams and disappointments, confronting his poetry with the realities of a rapidly changing society. His journey ultimately reveals the enduring political legacy of storied former president Thomas Sankara, assassinated in 1987 and known as the “African Che Guevara.”
35. Black International Cinema Berlin 2020
