Onward and Upward,
Always
The film festival began as a result of the first historical Black Cultural
Festival in Europe, produced and directed by Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre from
March 3-23, 1986 in West Berlin, Germany.
The contributors were mostly Black artists, filmmakers and intellectuals
from Africa and the African Diaspora presenting a spectrum of Black art,
Black cinema, Black thinking and life, and through seminars discussing their
various political, social and cultural experiences. The festival offered a
musical homage based upon the life experience of one of the great tap
dancers, Carnell Lyons.
Afterwards, the inspiring and exhausting journey led us to think and discuss
what aspect of this experience could be continued?
So, with the support of the Arsenal Cinema, Erika Gregor and other persons,
we decided to continue an aspect of the cultural festival, which developed
into Black International Cinema Berlin.
The name was adopted from the parent undertaking and so, Black International
Cinema Berlin, which was presented during the 3rd week of the Black Cultural
Festival was initiated and continued until today, 2020.
We thankfully managed to continue our inspiration.
Onward and Upward,
Always
Sometimes Sunshine is unexpected and heartily
Welcomed…
After waiting through April and August possibilities for the film festival
location, because of the “Worm”, neither location date promises arose!
Oh well, pandemics bring about various forms of disappointment,
unfortunately.
Lo and behold, ALEX - Open Channel Berlin rose to the occasion and kindly
invited the 35th Black International Cinema Berlin 2020 to present our
international and intercultural filmmakers artistry through their television
station and streaming possibility from October 15-19, 2020 evenings and
mornings.
In addition, on December 17, 2020, in cooperation with ALEX - Open Channel
Berlin, we will produce a special festival edition of our intercultural
magazine THE COLLEGIUM - Forum & Television Program Berlin live in the ALEX
Berlin studio.
The anniversary edition of our film festival occurs under the patronage of
the German Commission for UNESCO. Films from Africa, the African Diaspora
and contributions with intercultural and international topics will be
presented. This year the films come from Ghana, Canada, Gambia, Germany,
Togo, France, Italy, the USA, Portugal, Brazil, the Netherlands, Mozambique,
Austria, Ethiopia and Bulgaria.
