We cannot start telling a man's story without telling about his people, his country, the colour of the sky below which he has grown up, of the dust on the roads he has gone along. And if this man is fighting for the freedom of his country, we have to start from there to follow his journey. Alexis' journey begins in Kamenge, in the Northern Quarters of Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi. Kamenge is the symbol of one of the most cruel wars the world has ever known: the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi. The background and the glances of the ones who have not left, who have lost everything, who have been forced to fight, who have witnessed their parents' and brothers' death, and who claim their dignity back, are interwoven with the life of Alexis, who gave up his job as a journalist in 2007 to found a political party, the MSD, standing for President in 2010 and thus taking the many risks involved. In Burundi, although the war is over and the present government was elected democratically, the people who profess freedom of speech and thought put their life in danger. "Kamenge, Northern Quarters" is the picture of the soul of an entire country which asks for freedom and justice, the ideals Alexis is fighting for. "It is possible to build a liveable Burundi, it is possible. You must only believe it and take the risk," Alexis says. Yet, it's still a long way.

Wir können nicht anfangen, die Geschichte eines Mannes zu erzählen, ohne von seinen Leuten, seinem Land, der Farbe des Himmels, unter dem er aufwuchs, und dem Staub der Straße, die er entlang lief, zu berichten. Und wenn dieser Mann für die Freiheit seines Landes kämpft, müssen wir dort anfangen, seiner Reise zu folgen. Alexis' Reise beginnt in Kamenge, in den nördlichen Vierteln von Bujumbura, der Hauptstadt von Burundi. Kamenge ist das Symbol für einen der grausamsten Kriege, den die Welt je gesehen hat: der Konflikt zwischen Hutu und Tutsi. Der Hintergrund und die Blicke derjenigen, die nicht gegangen sind, die alles verloren haben, die zum Kämpfen gezwungen wurden, die Zeugen des Todes ihrer Eltern und Geschwister wurden, die ihre Würde zurückfordern, sind verwoben mit Alexis' Leben. Er gab seine Arbeit als Journalist 2007 auf, um eine politische Partei zu gründen, die MSD, die an der Präsidentschaftswahl 2010 teilnahm, und er nahm somit die vielen Risiken auf sich, die damit verbunden waren. Obwohl der Krieg in Burundi vorüber ist und die Regierung demokratisch gewählt wurde, bringen die Menschen, die für Rede- und Meinungsfreiheit eintreten, ihr Leben in Gefahr. "Kamenge Northern Quarters" ist das Bild der Seele eines ganzen Landes, das nach Freiheit und Gerechtigkeit verlangt, nach den Idealen, für die Alexis kämpft. "Es ist möglich, ein Burundi zu erschaffen, in dem das Leben lebenswert ist. Du musst nur daran glauben und das Risiko auf dich nehmen", sagt Alexis. Dennoch, es ist noch ein weiter Weg.
