Foreword
The Interfacing of Artistic Disciplines
"Art -- the use of the imagination to make things of aesthetic significance." New Webster's Dictionary & Thesaurus
The combination of artistic performance is based upon the principle of the interrelationship of all human expression. The aspirations of the Arts are the constant improvement of technique, analytical and enlightened perspectives, but above all, these manifestations of human expression (Arts) serve, support, inspire, and enrich Humankind. The "oneness" of the human race, therefore, defines the oneness or, hence, relationship of all "Arts" to each other and the source from which these manifestations of the human experience merge. The premise, therefore, of our on-stage expression is each action is an integral part of the whole. The Dance, Music, Lights, Costumes, Painting, etc., all interrelate and are interdependent. The painting, dance and on-stage activity occur simultaneously. The sights, sounds and expression of dance and painting are heightened by the conscious awareness of each other's presence and activities. These stimuli encourage, support and heighten the performer's experience, hence, expanding the scope for increased realization of a performer's potential, thereby advancing the Art, the Artist, and the Audience's experiences. Some might refer to this approach as "post-modernism:" and/or "demystification." We simply see this expression as a furthering of Community and, hence, Democratic values.

I am on stage painting during the entire dance performance. The dance and painting are mutually inspirational to all the performers. It is a collaboration, and it is a living collaboration. The longer we work together, the more the process organically develops. As the painter, watching the dancers and listening to the music moves me and initiates ideas spontaneously. On a more profound level, studying dance itself has had a wonderful effect on my painting. I do not believe in a separation between mind and body, and the discipline of dance promotes the flow of ideas and emotions. This flow manifests itself not only when I am painting but at many, if not all, other times, too. An artist of dancer, for that matter, contemplates both the benefits of the discipline in a strictly personal way for himself or herself as well as the effect or role of the created work in the world. Performing with the dancers has revealed to me another aspect of my nature as a painter. I am not one to sit still, have always loved to dance, and always sensed the desire to paint freely. But I never knew I could perform with emotional involvement as an abstract painter. Movement and music have provided the key. The Griffiths and I see many exciting possibilities for not only the development of the present collaboration but for including more types of artistic expression. We are not only expanded as artists but see performances which are both exciting and mind expanding. Collaborations allow insights into disciplines which sometimes are closed to us when seen independently. Prof. Anthony Droege |
