[Berlin, 02.11.2025] The Black International Cinema Berlin 2025 celebrates its 40th edition – a remarkable milestone for a festival internationally recognized for its longstanding commitment to intercultural dialogue, social awareness, and artistic diversity.

Produced and directed by Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith / Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre, in association with The Collegium – Forum & Television Program Berlin, “Footprints in the Sand?” ExhibitionBerlin and Cultural Zephyr e.V., the festival presents from November 21-23, 2025 at Marlene-Dietrich-Kinosaal at Rathaus Schöneberg Berlin a diverse program of films, art, and discussions centered on peace, humanity, and mutual understanding.

Taking place within the framework of CrossKultur 2025 and in cooperation with ALEX – Open Channel Berlin, the Black International Cinema Berlin continues its longstanding non-profit commitment to fostering respect, inclusion, and creativity.
With this year’s theme Peace! Now! Always! Please!, the festival calls for empathy, awareness, and peace – values essential in today’s challenging times.

The 40th anniversary invites audiences, artists, and filmmakers to celebrate together, reflect, and engage with new perspectives.

Black International Cinema Berlin 2025 – a space for encounter, inspiration, and hope.

The Black International Cinema Berlin has its origins in West Berlin in 1986. At that time, Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre produced and directed Europe’s first Historic, three-week Black Cultural Festival. Founded by Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith, the festival emerged in response to social challenges and was created to provide space for the voices, perspectives, and experiences of Black individuals and communities that were often overlooked in public discourse.
Originally conceived as an interdisciplinary cultural event and a forum for film art, exchange, and artistic diversity, the festival remains interdisciplinary and intercultural today, fostering dialogue among different communities, forms of expression, and lived experiences. At the same time, it serves as a platform for transnational cultural diplomacy, rooted in encounter, attentive listening, and mutual respect.
Through the ongoing work of its team – grounded in idealism, commitment, and a strong sense of responsibility – the Black International Cinema Berlin has become an established and enduring part of Berlin’s cultural landscape, continuing to embody its guiding principle: Art as a bridge, encounter as the foundation.

[Berlin, 02.11.2025] Das Black International Cinema Berlin 2025 feiert seine 40. Ausgabe – ein außergewöhnliches Jubiläum eines international anerkannten Festivals, das sich seit Jahrzehnten für interkulturellen Dialog, soziale Gerechtigkeit und künstlerische Vielfalt engagiert.

Unter der Leitung und Produktion von Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith / Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre, in Verbindung mit The Collegium - Forum & Television Program Berlin, „Footprints in the Sand?“ ExhibitionBerlin und Cultural Zephyr e.V., präsentiert das Festival vom 21.-23. November 2025 im Marlene-Dietrich-Kinosaal im Rathaus Schöneberg Berlin ein vielfältiges Film-, Kunst- und Diskussionsprogramm, das sich den Themen Frieden, Menschlichkeit und gegenseitigem Verständnis widmet.

Das Festival findet im Rahmen von CrossKultur 2025 und in Kooperation mit ALEX – Offener Kanal Berlin statt. Seit seiner Gründung steht das Black International Cinema Berlin für ein konsequent gemeinnütziges Engagement des gesamten Teams, das sich für die Förderung von Respekt, Inklusion und Kreativität einsetzt.

Mit dem diesjährigen Motto Peace! Now! Always! Please! ruft das Festival zu Rücksichtnahme, Empathie und Frieden auf – Werte, die in einer zunehmend herausfordernden Welt aktueller sind denn je.

Das 40. Jubiläum lädt Publikum, Filmschaffende und Kunstinteressierte ein, gemeinsam zu feiern, zu reflektieren und neue Perspektiven zu entdecken.

Black International Cinema Berlin 2025 – ein Ort der Begegnung, Inspiration und Hoffnung.

Das Black International Cinema Berlin hat seinen Ursprung in West-Berlin im Jahr 1986. Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre produzierte und leitete damals Europas erstes, historisches dreiwöchiges Black Cultural Festival. Ins Leben gerufen von Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith entstand das Festival als Reaktion auf gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen und mit dem Ziel, Raum für die Stimmen, Perspektiven und Erfahrungen Schwarzer Menschen zu schaffen, die in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung häufig wenig Beachtung fanden.

Ursprünglich als interdisziplinäres Kulturereignis und Forum für Filmkunst, Austausch und künstlerische Vielfalt konzipiert, ist das Festival bis heute interdisziplinär und interkulturell ausgerichtet und fördert den Dialog zwischen unterschiedlichen Gemeinschaften, Ausdrucksformen und Lebensrealitäten. Gleichzeitig versteht es sich als Plattform für transnationale kulturelle Diplomatie, in der Begegnung, Zuhören und gegenseitige Wertschätzung im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Die kontinuierliche Arbeit des Teams – getragen von Idealismus, Engagement und Verantwortungsbewusstsein – hat das Black International Cinema Berlin als festen Bestandteil der Berliner Kulturlandschaft etabliert und prägt seine Haltung bis heute: Kunst als Brücke, Begegnung als Grundlage.

Foreword

What Happened and Where Is It?

So, here we go again, maybe, but hopefully not?
People – we thought – this already happened 1 or 2 historical times and that would be enough!

Never Again!?

But somehow, “Never Again” seems to have an unclear world title-meaning, or something or other?
Sometimes, a while ago and now, the troubled devil is back upon us.

So, we pray, struggle, talk, read, hope, watch TV, listen to the radio and feel for uplifting and saving, once again and maybe, even more than once?

God forbid!

In a country at war from December 7, 1941 until 1945, hopefully we have learned, once for certain, that’s enough and should never happen again, with or without this inhumane 1945 “illustration” or from other unfortunately belated country stumblers!

I always thought, hoped, one huge example would be enough to prevent disaster from peoples land, homes, families, lives or anything other than the “desert demonstration”!?
I-we hope and pray for understanding, cooperation, courtesy, appreciation and at last,

PEACE!

Chicago and New York City provided education, financial uplifting, parental blessings, friends and vision.
Times passed and West-Berlin offered an invitation to Theater des Westens (Theater of the West).

Success unfolded and soon four Americans – including myself, Gayle McKinney, Lynnda Curry, Ricky Powell – and Detlef Bäcker, our German colleague, soon formulated Fountainhead Tanz Théâtre 1980, as a result of my reading an article in the International Herald Tribune regarding the Pompidou Museum, where the director referred to France as returning to „a source of creativity“, a „fountainhead of art“ after the dispersal of many art works by the National Socialists during World War II.

Because we four from the USA had extensive experience in theatre, dance, plus my singing, acting and inevitable enforced dance training by my acting teacher Everett Clark, Fine Arts Building Chicago, we created Fountainhead Tanz Théâtre, seeking intercultural, international undertakings toward peace, understanding and cooperation between people throughout everywhere!

This year 2025, we among Fountainhead Tanz Théâtre, Black International Cinema Berlin, The Collegium – Forum & Television Program Berlin, “Footprints in the Sand?” ExhibitionBerlin, Cultural Zephyr e.V., will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Black International Cinema Berlin 2025.

We shall continue our Fountainhead Tanz Théâtre creative efforts to arrive challenge by challenge at an all world desired,

Vorwort

Was ist geschehen und Wo ist es geblieben?

Also gut, hier sind wir wieder, vielleicht – aber hoffentlich nicht?

Die Menschheit – so glaubten wir – hatte diese Prüfung bereits ein- oder zweimal erfahren, und das hätte endgültig genügen müssen.

Nie wieder!?

Und doch scheint „Nie wieder“ weltweit oft eine unklare Bedeutung zu haben, oder sonst irgendeine andere?

Immer wieder tauchen alte Dämonen auf – damals, vor einiger Zeit, und nun erneut.
Wir beten, kämpfen, sprechen, lesen, hoffen, schauen fern, hören Radio und suchen nach Halt und Rettung – schon wieder und vielleicht mehr als einmal.

Gott bewahre!

In einem Land im Krieg vom 7. Dezember 1941 bis 1945 haben wir hoffentlich einmal für alle Zeit gelernt: Das ist genug und sollte nie wieder geschehen – mit oder ohne diese unmenschliche „Darstellung“ von 1945 oder durch andere, leider spätere Fehltritte des Landes!

Ich habe immer gehofft, ein einziges, großes Beispiel würde genügen, um Katastrophen für Menschen, ihre Familien, ihre Heimat und ihr Leben zu verhindern.
Ich hoffe – wir hoffen – und beten für Verständnis, Zusammenarbeit, Wohlwollen, Wertschätzung und schließlich für

FRIEDEN!

Chicago und New York City schenkten uns Bildung, Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten, elterlichen Rückhalt, Freundschaften und Visionen.
Später lud West-Berlin uns ins Theater des Westens ein.

Erfolge stellten sich ein, und 1980 gründeten vier Amerikaner*innen – ich, Gayle McKinney, Lynnda Curry und Ricky Powell – gemeinsam mit unserem deutschen Kollegen Detlef Bäcker das Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre. Die Idee entstand, nachdem ich einen Artikel in der International Herald Tribune über das Pompidou-Museum gelesen hatte, in dem Frankreich als „Quelle der Kreativität“ beschrieben wurde – ein „Ursprung der Kunst“ nach der Zerstreuung unzähliger Kunstwerke durch die Nationalsozialisten während des Zweiten Weltkriegs.

Da wir vier aus den USA umfangreiche Erfahrungen in den Bereichen Theater und Tanz mitbrachten – dazu kamen noch meine Gesangs- und Schauspielausbildung und das unvermeidliche, von meinem Schauspiellehrer Everett Clark am Fine Arts Building in Chicago erzwungene Tanztraining – gründeten wir das Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre. Ziel war es, interkulturelle, internationale Projekte zur Förderung von Frieden, Verständnis und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt zu gestalten.

Im Jahr 2025 feiern wir – Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre, Black International Cinema Berlin, The Collegium - Forum & Television Program Berlin, die Ausstellung „Footprints in the Sand?“ ExhibitionBerlin, Cultural Zephyr e.V. – das 40-jährige Jubiläum des Black International Cinema Berlin.

Wir werden unsere kreativen Aktivitäten bei Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre fortsetzen, um Schritt für Schritt das zu erreichen, was sich die ganze Welt wünscht:
