Everyone is equal in the new South Africa: Black and White, Indian and "Colored". On a train ride aboard the Shosholoza Express, they encounter the rifts in their biographies. 17 years after the end of Apartheid, nothing is the same, but neither is anything the way it should be. As the film travels through modern metropolises, destitute townships and endless landscapes, it tells a tale of lasting resentment, inner divisions, lingering prejudices and unfulfilled hopes. All the passengers are on the same train, going in the same direction, but not all are in the same compartment.

Im neuen Südafrika sind alle gleich: Schwarze und Weiße, Inder und "Farbige". Auf einer Zugfahrt im Shosholoza Express begegnen sie den Brüchen ihrer Vergangenheit. 17 Jahre nach der Apartheid ist nichts, wie es war, aber auch nichts, wie es sein sollte. Auf der Reise durch moderne Stadtzentren, verwahrloste Townships und endlose Weiten erzählt der Film von andauerndem Unmut, inneren Konflikten, nicht überwundenen Vorurteilen und unerfüllten Hoffnungen. Alle sind im selben Zug, fahren in dieselbe Richtung, sitzen aber nicht im selben Abteil.
